Three-Cent Pieces, 1851-1889

1851-1873 Silver Three-Cent Pieces, the afflunce of California gold made silver as common comparison to the earlier status. Silver was undervalued, beginning in 1850, American silver coins started disappearing from circulation. To provide small coin for commerce, Mint introduced Three-Cent piece called Trime, the smallest US silverf coins, made of 0.750 of silver that worth than its face value.
1865-1889 Nickel Three-Cent Pieces lunched when silver coins were still being reserved by the public. Meanwhile, the hottest denomination coin was two-cent piece in circulation. After 1875 the silver coin re-circulated again, the three-cent denomination became redundant and mintages dropped.
