Liberty Head Gold Quarter Eagles, 1804-1907

Design by Christian Gobrecht, Liberty Head Quarter Eagle remained in use with the same dasign from 1840 to 1907, was one of the longest spans in US coinage historyt. Branch- mint that struch before the Civil war were often faintly struck in areas and had weak dentile. The Dahlonega and Charlotte mints would not have sharper appearence than Philadelphia mint, with some exception of C and D coins.
Proofs exist relative to their original mintage, prior to 1890s are rare. Cameo contrast is the rule prior to 1902.
1848 CAL Gold Quarter Eagles, about 230 ounces of gold were sent to Secretary of War Marcy by California military Governor. The gold was turned over to Mint and made into Quarter Eagles with Stamp mark CAL.
